Catalan Surgical Society annual congress

10/2019

A few months ago, the Catalan Society of Surgery invited us to present a Spiegel’s hernia case at their congress in Barcelona on October 17-18. This experience deepened our understanding of the condition and gave us the opportunity to present our work.

We also attended several noteworthy conferences and poster presentations, including:

– The Salvador Cardenal Session, featuring:
– Virgili Award: Dr. Salvador Navarro on errors in the initial care of polytraumatized patients.
– Gimbernat Award: Dr. Julio Garcia Aguilar on curing rectal cancer without surgery.
– Penetrating cervical lesions by Dr. Anna González Castillo.
– Open abdomen and damage control in septic patients by Dr. Rodrigo Medrano Caviedes.

We are grateful to the Catalan Surgical Society for the opportunity and to Dr. Laia Torrent for her mentorship.

ESCP annual congress

09/2019

On February 24th, we held our first Surgical Symposium for medical students.

Dr. Salvador Navarro from Parc Taulí, Sabadell, presented on ATLS management of polytrauma patients and its implementation in Spain, while Dr. Julio Mayol from Clínico San Carlos, Madrid, discussed the future of surgery.

Medical students from various Catalan faculties participated in dynamic workshops, learning skills such as polytrauma management, plastic surgery techniques, cardiac valve suturing on animal hearts, using arthroscopy devices, ophthalmology surgery, suturing, and even a medical escape room.

During the brunch, students had the opportunity to interact with doctors and residents, discussing their specialties. The day concluded with a closing ceremony, where we thanked all participants and gave special recognition to Dr. Manuel Pera for his significant role in organizing the symposium.

We hope it was a rewarding experience and look forward to seeing you at Scalpel 2021.

Meeting with Rotterdam VCMS society

07/2019

Gta to know their experiences

Last July, seizing the stay of four medical students from Erasmus University Rotterdam in different surgical services of our hospital, we were able to meet and exchange ideas and projects between the two surgical societies: VCMS and AQG.

We could know first-hand the VCMS, an organization of medical students from the Netherlands who have a keen interest on surgery. Annually, they organize conferences, workshops and many other activities such as Summer Clerkships with our hospital.

Moreover, we had the opportunity to present our society, that has much in common with the conferences, workshops and clinical exchanges. Besides that, we explained our minor surgery and major surgery activities, our participation in both international and national congresses and our star project, the I gimbernat surgical symposium in 2020 called SCALPEL.

It was an enriching exchange and we are looking forward to have more projects together. See you soon VCMS!

The Doctor as a Humanist (DASH) online course and international Symposium.

04/2019

In April, Miranda Rico and Miriam Cazador from the Gimbernat Surgical Association attended the Second International Symposium “The Doctor as a Humanist” in Moscow, enriching their participation in a related online course. They engaged with global medical professionals and students, attended lectures on medical humanities, and presented a study on integrating these concepts into UPF’s curriculum.

The symposium emphasized empathy and sensitivity in the doctor-patient relationship. They expressed gratitude for the experience and look forward to participating in the next symposium in Mexico.

Interactive Days of Surgery in Pamplona

09/2019

This year, we attended the Jornadas Interactivas de Cirugía para Estudiantes (JOICE) in Pamplona, an event for medical students interested in surgery. We participated in conferences on Cardiac Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Orthopaedic Surgery, observed live surgeries, and engaged in various surgical workshops.

We also presented our association’s project, AQG, to encourage the formation of similar groups at other universities. Our poster on “The Impact of a Surgical Association on the Training of Medical Students” won second prize.

If you’re a third-year student or higher with an interest in surgery, we highly recommend attending JOICE next year!
