Surgical Anatomy Lectures

Fournier's Gangrene

20/01/2025

On Monday, January 20, Dr. Ana María González Castillo, a FEBS and EmSurg certified specialist, gave an informative session with her knowledge on the surgical approach to serious soft tissue infections. In her presentation, she particularly highlighted Fournier’s Gangrene, which is rare but serious and has a high clinical relevance due to its rapid progression and potential severity.

The doctor began by addressing the incidence of these infections, highlighting specific data on the patients we treat at Hospital del Mar. She then emphasized the mechanisms that facilitate their development and the predisposing conditions.

The central point of the session was surgical management, including extensive debridement, control of the margins of affected tissue, and the importance of speed in the intervention. Although briefly, she also mentioned the options for subsequent reconstruction.

The session was especially interesting because it included the participation of students from all courses, which allowed for the creation of a shared and multidisciplinary learning space. For many of the attendees, this was the first opportunity to get close to the reality of such a critical and complex medical emergency, and to understand how it is resolved in a real hospital setting.

Common anatomical mistakes in surgical anatomy

21/05/2019

The 21st of May we had a conference on Common anatomical mistakes in surgical anatomy by José Antonio Pereira, a general surgeon and professor of anatomy of the bachelor’s degree in Medicine (UAB-UPF) on the Hospital del Mar University Campus.

We were able to have an overview on the importance of knowing the correct anatomy as well as realize that some time social media has a negative influence on medical knowledge. Moreover, Dr. Pereira has showed us a compilation of anecdotes about the wrong anatomical nomenclature.

We want to thank Dr. Pereira for his amazing conference and we would like end this text with his final quote: “It is easier to deceive people than to convince them that they have been deceived ” – Mark Twain.
