Catalan Surgical Society annual congress
10/2019
We had the privilege of presenting a Spiegel’s hernia case at the Catalan Society of Surgery Congress in Barcelona (October 17-18). This experience enhanced our understanding of the condition and allowed us to share our work.
We also attended several key conferences and poster presentations, including: Salvador Cardenal Session, Virgili Award, Gimbernat Award, Dr. Anna González Castillo, Dr. Rodrigo Medrano Caviedes.
ESCP annual congress
09/2019
On February 24th, we hosted our first Surgical Symposium for medical students, featuring presentations from Dr. Salvador Navarro and Dr. Julio Mayol. Students participated in hands-on workshops and networking activities. The event concluded with a ceremony honoring Dr. Manuel Pera’s contributions.


Meeting with Rotterdam VCMS society

In July, we hosted four Erasmus University Rotterdam medical students, allowing us to exchange ideas with the VCMS and AQG surgical societies. We discussed our shared activities, including conferences, workshops, and the SCALPEL symposium, and look forward to future collaborations with VCMS.





The Doctor as a Humanist (DASH) online course and international Symposium.

In April, Miranda Rico and Miriam Cazador attended the Second International Symposium “The Doctor as a Humanist” in Moscow. They engaged with global professionals, attended medical humanities lectures, and presented a study on integrating these concepts into UPF’s curriculum, looking forward to the next symposium in Mexico.



Interactive Days of Surgery in Pamplona

This year, we attended the Jornadas Interactivas de Cirugía para Estudiantes (JOICE) in Pamplona, participating in conferences and workshops on cardiac, neurosurgery, and orthopaedics. We also presented AQG, won second prize for our poster, and encourage others to attend next year.



Professor Manuel Pera elected to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

On November 9, 2018, Professor Manuel Pera, Honorary President of our surgical society, was honored with a Fellowship ad hominem by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEdin). Founded in 1505, RCSEdin is one of the world’s oldest and largest surgical institutions, renowned for its commitment to surgical excellence through education and training.
The award ceremony, chaired by President Professor Michael Griffin, included a presentation of Professor Pera by Miss Anna Paisley, a member of the RCSEdin Council. Professor Pera also addressed the new diplomates and fellows during the event.
European Society of Coloproctology
09/2018
Hello! I’m Miranda, President of the Gimbernat Surgical Society and EuroSurg member. In September, I attended the ESCP Annual Meeting in Nice, France.
The event was enlightening, featuring lectures by top surgeons, discussions on ongoing trials like IMAGINE, and workshops on writing papers. Highlights included hearing Steven Wexner on rectal cancer, Dr. John Alverdy on microbiomics, and connecting with other research groups like INCISION and GlobalSurg.
This congress was a valuable experience, showcasing the importance of collaboration in advancing medical knowledge. We’re excited to continue our work with EuroSurg and build new partnerships.
How to get involved in research as medical student?

On November 21st, Ruth Blanco from Eurosurg introduced their international research group to our association. Eurosurg, founded in 2015, involves students and trainees in multicenter studies across over 10 countries. We’re now participating in their IMAGINE study on ileus management. This involvement is a valuable addition to our academic experience, and we’ve created a new page to update on our research activities.
The symposium: "Can the Humanities transform 21st Century Medicine?"

Last weekend, the International Symposium “Can the Humanities Transform 21st Century Medicine?” took place in Palma de Mallorca, organized by top universities including Johns Hopkins and Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
Professor Manuel Pera, Honorary President of the Gimbernat Surgical Association, spoke on the role of medical humanities in balancing technological advances in physician training. He praised the Gimbernat Surgical Association for its student-led approach to integrating humanities.
Carlos Ruiz, a former Gimbernat President, also participated in the symposium. Dr. Pera’s interview on Radio IB3 is available:
Surgery Elective Exchanges with King's College and Erasmus University Surgical Societies
09/2017
For the first time two students from the Erasmus University Surgical Society and two students from the King´s College Surgical Society spent a clerkship period in surgical services at the Hospital del Mar as an exchanged program between our surgical societies. All four experiences were very successful and may favor future exchanges in the coming years. We are committed to maintain and even improved our links with other surgical societies.
Best surgery teacher award

To celebrate our association’s fifth anniversary, we organized a conference on Antoni de Gimbernat, honoring the surgeon after whom our association is named. Before the conference, we presented the Gimbernat Award for Best Surgery Teacher, voted by 4th-year UPF-UAB medicine students. This year, Dr. Marta Pascual, a colorectal surgeon at Hospital del Mar and Associate Professor of Surgery, won the award for her exceptional ability to inspire and motivate students.
Gimbernat Surgical Association at the XXXI Annual Congress of the Spanish Association of Surgeons in Madrid

Idoia Álvarez, President of the Gimbernat Surgical Association (2014-2016), presented a poster at the XXXI Annual Meeting of the Spanish Association of Surgeons in Madrid. The study showed that 71% of members felt the association enhanced their preparation for a surgical career, with general and digestive surgery as the most popular specialty. The session’s Chairman praised the association’s impact and encouraged its ongoing efforts.
AQG now sponsored by Elsevier
01/2016
Since January, the association gained its first sponsor, Elsevier editorial. Reviews of Elsevier surgical manuals are available on the page, including a review by Professor Manuel Pera. A new book was donated to Pompeu Fabra University’s library.
Best surgery teacher award

The 2015-2016 academic year began with a conference on clerkship and Erasmus experiences. Before that, the Gimbernat award for best surgery teacher, voted by 4th-year medicine students, was presented to Dr. Juan Sancho for his ability to inspire motivation.

Like every year, in February 2015 took place the Farewell Gala for the sixth year medical students. During the event, our honorary President had the honor of receiving a prize delivered by the students.
