SCALPEL III
Gimbernat Surgical Symposium 2022
Welcome to the third edition of Scalpel – Gimbernat Surgical Symposium 2022.
In this year’s edition, we expanded the participant capacity to accommodate 90 students, and introduced innovative surgical workshops coverint Vascular Surgery, Urology, gynecology, Bandages and Basic Life Support
The inaugural session, titled “The Future of Surgery: Digital Revolution Continues,” was presented by Prof. Eduardo Targarona, Head of the Gastrointestinal and Hematological Surgical Unit at Hospital Sant Pau, Barcelona. Dr. Targarona addressed the challenges that future generations will confront in light of technological advances and big data.
The second conference, led by Dr. Irene Bello, Senior Faculty of the Thoracic Surgery Service at Hospital Clínic, focused on “Thoracic Surgery: Beyond Lung Cancer.” Dr. Bello highlighted the main areas and pathologies within this surgical specialty, offering insights through real surgery images and videos.
Following these enlightening sessions, students had the opportunity for a brief coffee break to network, leading to the commencement of the first series of surgical workshops.
This year’s workshops encompassed a diverse range of topics, including basic suturing skills, laparoscopic skills using the Pelvitrainer simulator, simulated trauma scenarios, cardiac surgery (aortic valve replacement), vascular surgery (aortic aneurysm and vascular anastomosis), dermatology surgical skills (skin graft and flaps), traumatology bandages, ophthalmological surgical techniques (keratoplasty), urological surgery (ureterorenoscopy), gynecological surgery (hysteroscopy), and basic life support (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
On the concluding day, diplomas were awarded to all workshop participants, and the prestigious Best Surgery Teacher of the Year Award was bestowed upon Dr. Anna Casajoana. Additionally, several MIR exam scholarships were raffled among the attending students.
We hope that all participants thoroughly enjoyed the learning and practical aspects of surgery and look forward to welcoming them again next year! A special thank you extends to our collaborators, particularly the surgeons from Hospital del Mar, who played a crucial role in instructing the surgical workshops. Finally, our sincere gratitude, as always, to our Honorary President, Prof. Manuel Pera, for his unwavering and invaluable support.
