Surgical Skills Workshop

Establishing the Cornerstones for Upcoming Surgeons

At the Gimbernat Surgical Society, we recognize the significance of imparting superior and practical instruction to fresh medical students enrolled in our university. For this reason, our society has assumed responsibility for instructing its members on essential surgical proficiencies through workshops. Since 2011, we have conducted two annual programs – namely Suturing Workshop and Asepsis & Antisepsis Workshop – aiming at instilling crucial basic skills that are indispensable in medicine.

Workshop on Asepsis and Antisepsis: Guaranteeing Excellence and Safety

Introduced in 2017, our Asepsis & Antisepsis Workshop has become a vital component of our training program. It stresses the importance of maintaining sterile techniques to prevent infections and is an essential part of ensuring patient safety during surgery. Students are taught how to create and maintain a sterile environment in the OR by teaching them key practices that promote cleanliness, sterility, hygiene, among others. The correct implementation of these techniques can greatly improve patient recovery times while reducing complications from infection which could otherwise lead to prolonged hospital stays or even death

By participating in this workshop, students gain knowledge on how to enter and conduct themselves within an operating room as a medical student. They acquire familiarity with the necessary protocols and etiquette needed for navigating such a high-stress environment.

Crafting Precision and Confidence: The Art of Suturing Workshop

The inaugural Suturing Workshop initiated by our surgical society provides novice medical students with the chance to acquire and hone diverse suturing procedures under Hospital del Mar’s surgeons’ tutelage. This workshop instills in learners an understanding of how crucial this skill is for prospective practitioners since it forms a basis utilized in numerous surgeries.

Suturing is of utmost importance not only in the operating room but also for effectively closing wounds, leading to a favorable patient outcome with reduced risks of infections and scarring. Early learning opportunities in suturing instill confidence among medical students for undertaking more intricate tasks later on.

Building a Strong Foundation for Future Medical Professionals

Participation in our Suturing and Asepsis, as well as Antisepsis Workshops offer new medical students an invaluable hands-on experience. These workshops equip them with practical skills and knowledge that they can directly apply to their future careers as healthcare providers, helping bridge the gap between theory-based education and real-world practices. Moreover, these sessions promote a comprehensive understanding of surgical procedures along with patient care techniques.

In addition, the workshops provide students with essential skills that serve as a strong base for their medical education and training. Early exposure to these fundamental competencies builds confidence and helps develop proficiency which proves advantageous throughout their professional journey, whether they opt for surgery or any other specialization in medicine.

The Gimbernat Surgical Society upholds a strong commitment to equipping upcoming medical professionals with the necessary resources for triumph. Our workshops on Suturing and Asepsis, as well as Antiseptic practices, showcase our unwavering devotion towards facilitating excellence in medical education. By doing so, we ensure that each student can competently administer optimal care to their future patients by being adequately prepared.
